Why This Is Different

I’ve sat in enough women’s empowerment spaces to know what’s missing. The motivation is real, but it doesn’t help you when someone gets too close in a parking lot. The awareness advice is well-meaning, but knowing danger exists doesn’t tell you what to do when it happens to you.

Who’s behind it

My name is Ann du Plessis. I’m a Goju Ryu Karate black belt, trauma debriefer, first responder with S.T.A.R.T. Rescue, and co-founder of FLAG Academy, a safety training organisation working across schools, corporates, and communities in South Africa.

I’m also a survivor of sexual assault, emotional and financial abuse, bullying, and workplace harassment. That’s not a footnote, it’s the reason this work exists.

For almost a decade, I’ve been teaching women in gyms, boardrooms, school halls, and community centres what they are capable of, how fear actually works and how to stay safe.

Most women have been taught to override their instincts and put everyone else’s feelings and needs ahead of their own. We work on reversing that because it’s one of the biggest reasons women find themselves in uncomfortable and dangerous situations.

Be Your Own Hero is everything I’ve learned through martial arts, trauma-informed coaching, GBV prevention work, and years of sitting across from women who came to a session unsure of what they needed and left knowing exactly what they were capable of, brought together into a monthly membership you can work through from wherever you are.
